Homework

At Stoneferry Primary School, we believe homework should be purposeful, manageable and support the development of children’s foundational knowledge. Following a review of our homework approach and consideration of current educational research, we have streamlined our expectations to focus on reading, phonics and mathematics. These areas provide the essential building blocks for future learning and success across the curriculum.

Reading

Reading is one of the most important ways children can develop their vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and enjoyment of books.

All children are expected to:

• Read with an adult at least three times each week.

• Have each reading session recorded in their reading record.

Phonics

Children accessing our Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics programme will receive phonics QR codes each Friday to support learning at home.

We recommend:

• Around five minutes of phonics practice each evening.

• Short, regular practice sessions throughout the week.

Mathematics

Years 3 to 6

Children should complete:

• 25 minutes per week on Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS).

Years 1 and 2

Children should complete:

• 20 minutes per week on NumBots.

These online platforms help children build confidence, accuracy and fluency with key number facts.

EYFS Homework

Homework in EYFS is designed to be practical, engaging and closely linked to classroom learning.

Each week, children will receive:

• Phonics QR codes to support letter recognition and phonics practice.

• A letter formation activity linked to the sounds taught that week.

• A short maths activity shared through Tapestry.

• Parent-and-child reading books to share and enjoy at home.

Regular practice helps children revisit their learning, build confidence and develop strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics.

Why We Focus on These Areas

Our homework approach is designed to help children secure the foundational knowledge and skills they need to be successful learners. By focusing on reading, phonics and mathematics, we can support children in developing strong foundations that underpin learning across the curriculum.

Our homework expectations aim to:

• Develop confident and enthusiastic readers.

• Build fluency and recall of key mathematical facts.

• Strengthen children’s foundational knowledge in reading, writing and mathematics.

• Support long-term learning through regular practice and retrieval.

• Provide a manageable routine for families.

• Promote positive learning habits at home.

Our homework expectations are outlined below.
